Weekly Skate Lessons and Supervised Free Skate Sessions
Location: Kingsley Devon Sports Hall (Indoor)

Overview

The Kingsley Skateboarding Club offers structured coaching and supervised skateboarding sessions for students in Year 3 and up (typically ages 7+). Sessions run every Saturday in half-termly blocks, and all equipment is provided.

Each Saturday includes two sessions:

  • Skateboarding Lesson: 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM

  • Supervised Free Skate: 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM

Participants can book for the lesson, the free skate (subject to ability), or both.

Term Dates

Autumn 2 Block

  • Saturday 8 November

  • Saturday 15 November

  • Saturday 22 November

  • Saturday 29 November

  • Saturday 6 December (Note: This session will take place at an alternate venue in Bideford due to the Kingsley Christmas Market)

Skateboarding Lesson (Structured Coaching ratio 1:6)

A 1-hour fully coached session focused on building fundamental skateboarding skills and confidence. Suitable for beginners through to developing skaters.

Lesson content includes:

  • Pushing, balance, turning, and stopping

  • Ramp basics and safe skatepark habits

  • Introduction to tricks (where appropriate)

  • Falling safely and confidence building

  • Surfskate crossover techniques for surf students

Who it's for:
Students in Year 3 and up (7+ years old). All abilities welcome, coaches will differentiate during the session.

Supervised Free Skate (ratio 1:12)

A relaxed but safely supervised session where skaters can ride at their own pace and practice skills. A qualified coach will be present to support, advise, and maintain a safe environment.

To join Free Skate:
Participants must demonstrate independent skateboarding ability. The best route is through the lesson block.

We may also approve access if the student has previously trained with us through Kingsley Surf Academy or has been assessed by the coaching team.

Younger Skaters (Years 1–2)

We’re currently focused on launching sessions for Year 3 and up. However, if you’re interested in sessions for younger children (ages 5–6), please email us*. If there’s enough interest, we will consider creating a separate class.

Equipment and Venue

  • Indoor venue: Kingsley Sports Hall (ramp-equiped, weatherproof)

  • All skateboards, helmets, and pads provided (personal equipment welcome)

  • Full risk assessment and safety protocols in place

  • Parents may observe from the viewing area if they wish

Progression Framework

All students will work within our Kingsley Skateboarding Framework, a clear, structured progression pathway based on our Surf Academy's successful Surf Passport. Students receive feedback and coaching aligned to their level.

Coach

Lead Coach: James Swanson
James is an certified Skateboard GB coach and the founder of North Devon Skateboarding School and co-founder Skate Molton CIC. With years of experience teaching all ages and abilities, James has built an inclusive, encouraging approach that helps everyone find confidence and flow on a board. His lessons focus on progression, safety, and fun. Other coaches may be supporting and taking groups depending on sign ups.

FAQs

Is this suitable for beginners?
Yes. The coaching is designed for all levels and focuses on foundational skills for newer riders.

Can my child do just the free skate?
Only if they are assessed as ready. Most students will attend the lesson block first before moving into free skate.

Is it weather-dependent?
No. Sessions are indoors, and will run every weekend regardless of weather.

Do you run holiday or community skate events?
Yes. We have skateboarding events and holiday programmes. More details will be announced during term.

Do parents need to stay?
No. However, there is a viewing area if you'd like to watch.

Do students need to attend Kingsley Devon to take part?
No. Students from any school or local community are welcome to join. This club is open to all children in the appropriate age group, regardless of where they attend school.
